When people first discover astrology, one of the most common questions is: Are we compatible?
Synastry can help answer that question, but it goes much deeper than comparing Sun signs or deciding whether two zodiac signs are supposed to get along.
In astrology, synastry is the practice of comparing two natal charts to understand how two people affect one another. You can use it to explore romantic relationships, friendships, family dynamics, business partnerships, creative collaborations, and almost any meaningful connection between two people.
A synastry chart can reveal where attraction comes naturally, where communication flows, where emotional needs align, and where two people may consistently challenge one another. It can even help explain why one relationship feels immediately comfortable while another feels magnetic, complicated, transformative, or strangely familiar.
How Does Synastry Work?
There are two major pieces we look at when comparing charts:
The aspects between the two charts show us how the planets interact.
The house overlays show us where in each person's life that relationship is experienced most strongly.
And importantly, synastry works both ways. You might activate someone's 7th house of partnership while they activate your 5th house of romance and pleasure—meaning two people can genuinely care for one another while experiencing the relationship in very different ways.
That's one reason synastry is so much more interesting than simply asking whether two signs are compatible.
Chemistry Isn't the Same as Compatibility
Some connections can create incredible attraction without necessarily creating stability. Others can offer emotional security, friendship, and longevity without feeling overwhelmingly intense.
Synastry isn't about labeling a relationship as "good" or "bad." Instead, it gives us a language for asking a much more interesting question:
What do we bring out in one another?
